This article will help parents to understand 10 problems faced by children while preparing for exams

Our human race has suffered from an unprecedented period where people suffered from all types of stress and pain. This COVID lockdown period was when they have gone through a lot. The health anxieties, financial crisis, mental trauma, and even some lost their loved ones.

Amongst everyone, children were the most affected ones. They lost their friends, their school, their regular studies, and playgrounds. They felt the impact of stress which everyone faced. Their life shrank to a few inches of screen.

Students have returned to their schools after a long period of 1.5 years of pandemic lockdown. Though the online classes were a substitute, they could help very little. Every student and teacher felt unsatisfaction, despite all best efforts. Online evaluations also kept their education needs in check.

Let’s try and understand just what problems the students can face in the written exams held at school.

1.      Lack of writing habits:

In exams, well-maintained handwriting can change the outcome drastically. It can leave an excellent impression on the teacher, and with good speed. The child can cover up all the questions and still have time for thorough revision. However, will the children now be able to utilize such handwriting?

Many parents have recently raised issues over their child’s bad and slow handwriting. Due to the lack of writing throughout the pandemic period, children have lost their habit of writing. The speed and quality that once came out naturally might not be there now. It can cause significant problems for the child sitting writing the exam.

2.      Screen Addiction

It is no secret, many organizations and health experts have explicitly warned about screen addiction. And its consequences for the young generation.

The children’s screen time went up to 9-10 hrs a day during the pandemic time. Though it included online classes, such intense screen time affects the focus of the child. Children preferred to listen to songs or play mobile games in the middle of their homework and during classes. When the mind has been trained to consume entertainment material in the middle of work. Such screen-addicted children will probably face hardship when translating their thoughts and answers on paper in the exam hall. Communication with children is required to share the ill – effects of too much screen time.

3.      Reduction of concentration-time

Exams demand concentration, focus, and determination. The average concentration time is seen in children before the pandemic was 20-30 mins. However, the screens that flicker every 5 seconds have reduced the concentration span drastically. Exposure to Multiple apps, excessive notifications, and constant media consumption outstretch the focus of a developing child to the point. They cannot stay on one thought or topic for more than 5-10 mins.

4.      Reduction of competitive spirit

The competitive spirit in a class keeps the child motivated to move ahead with their academics and perform better than their peers. One of the undiscussed disadvantages of online courses was the lack of interaction between classmates and friends. Many children felt lonely in their homes as the distance between their friends increased the communication gap. This distance not only affects their social skills but indirectly affects their academics as well affecting them preparing for exams. Not being able to cheer on for their friend’s well-earned marks in tests. Not seeing others put in the effort will make a child lose their strive to work hard since no example or environment helps them do so.

5.      Lack of conceptual clarity

Teachers have always tried their hardest to make their students learn and understand each little concept in detail to receive an excellent education. When the students are physically present, it is much easier to explain things. It also helps to introduce ideas and various concepts in-depth, really helpful in preparing for exams. Online classes are a different story. Many students complained that they didn’t feel engaged in classes and felt more difficulty grasping. Even teachers admitted that it was hard for them to communicate in class as online communications were limited and not capable enough. The teachers were also new to all the software and the teaching environment. Due to which the student doesn’t have clarity about what they are doing. Children giving answers under the pressure of the exam can become very hard.

6.      Lack of self-written notes

From ages, the children used to take notes with their classes under the supervision of teachers. These systematic notes were the backbone of the whole revision process of the examination and helped in preparing for exams. But now, the children do not have organized notes or notebooks. They have scattered pdfs and worksheets, which are almost impossible to assimilate. The lack of such organized notes makes the exams a nightmare.

7.      Lack of practice

Most of the students have not done sufficient homework and practice which is really required while preparing for exams. Their work done has not been checked and verified by teachers. Due to the lack of preparation, profound clarity, and the speed of solving the questions has not been built properly.

8.      Distractions

The entire Covid period was full of distractions. All the students have easy excess to phones and other devices, which were then their classrooms. Even parents had to provide these devices for their children so that they could attend their classes.

After class timings, the children were busy with video games, social media, and numerous other online distractions. Instead of revising the concepts, they were on their devices and enjoyed the fun time.

A significant number of students did not attend the classes even in their class time. They kept their videos off and did not attend the classes which became the reason for children not preparing for exams effectively.

The screen has become an addiction for all children. The notifications pinging them every minute are so distracting that they cannot focus on their studies.

9.      The subjective pattern of exam:

During the Covid period, all the exams went objective type. They were scoring good marks in the objective-type examination within the environment under the child’s control. Children used books and took the help of google search to give their answers.

Now switching on to the pen-paper mode within the school-controlled environment would be creating panic in them. Such a situation is going to make anxiety and frustration in the mind of students.

10.    Time-schedule management:

For the last, the children had lost their schedule. Students used to connect to their class while they were still inside their beds. Following a consistent and schedule proved to be a dream for parents. It is challenging for them to appear in their exams confidently without a properly planned program and cooperation.

Examination performance builds confidence in a child. If a child performs well, he is encouraged to perform even better with boosted self-esteem.
